What to Expect When You Visit the Rested Pillow Showroom

Most people walk into a mattress store already bracing for the pitch. The hovering salesperson. The fake markdown from a price nobody ever paid. The "today only" deal that somehow never expires. It's exhausting before you've even tried a single mattress.

Our showroom in St. Joseph, Michigan doesn't work like that.

If you've been putting off mattress shopping because of what you've heard or experienced at the big chains, this post is for you. Here's exactly what to expect when you walk through our door.

A Different Kind of Mattress Store

The mattress industry has a reputation problem, and it's earned. Walk into most chain stores and you'll find rows of near-identical beds under fluorescent lights, model names that change from store to store to make comparison shopping nearly impossible, and salespeople working toward a commission. The whole setup seems like it’s designed to confuse you into spending more than you need to vs help you find the right mattress for you.

We built Rested Pillow to be the opposite of that.

We're a family-owned, owner-operated store in St. Joseph. Every mattress we sell is handcrafted in Michigan by Capitol Bedding, a family-owned maker that has been building beds in Grand Ledge, MI since 1946. The second-generation owner has been making mattresses since he was 14 years old. That's the kind of experience and care that goes into every bed you'll try in our showroom, and you won't find these mattresses anywhere else.

Nobody on our team works on commission. There are no sales quotas, no "manager specials," and no pressure to buy anything on the day you visit. We've maintained five-star ratings on Google and Yelp since we started in 2009 because we do things differently. That's not a marketing line. It's just what happens when you make a better product and treat people how they want to be treated.

A Few Things to Know Before You Come In

Do You Need an Appointment?

No, you don't need an appointment to visit us. Walk-ins are always welcome during showroom opening hours. That said, if you'd like to guarantee some dedicated time with one of us, especially if you have specific questions or want to work through a sleep issue in detail , booking ahead means we can give you our full attention from the moment you arrive. You can schedule an appointment here.

What Should You Bring?

A few things that will make your visit more useful:

  • Your partner or spouse - if they'll be sleeping on the mattress,  too. Choosing a mattress for two people without the other person trying it can be tough, and we'd rather help you both get it right.
  • Any information about your current mattress -  how long you've had it, what you like or don't like about it, and how it's been affecting your sleep. This gives us a real starting point.
  • Details about any pain or discomfort you're dealing with -  do you have back pain, hip pain, shoulder issues? Tell us; it changes which mattresses make sense for you.
  • Comfortable clothes - you'll be lying down on mattresses, so you want to be able to relax. Some customers have even worn their pajamas!
  • Some information about your current mattress set up - what's under your mattress (box spring, platform, metal frame)? Do you have a headboard you'd like to keep? Note your preferred bed height too; if you're going with an adjustable base, we'll need all of this before delivery.

That's genuinely all you need. You don't have to do hours of research before you come in. Part of why we're here is to help you cut through the noise.

How Long Should You Plan to Stay?

Give yourself some time to try different mattresses, especially if you haven't bought one in a while. Sleep experts consistently recommend spending a minimum of 15 minutes on any mattress you're seriously considering; a quick push on the edge tells you very little about how it'll feel at 2am.

We won't rush you. Take your time, ask questions, go back to a mattress you tried earlier. There's no clock running.

What Happens When You Walk Through the Door

You'll be greeted warmly and we’ll ask you some questions; not to qualify you as a buyer, but to actually understand what you need. Things like: How do you sleep? What's your current mattress like? Are you waking up with any aches? Do you sleep hot? Does your partner move around a lot during the night?

These aren't filler questions. The answers genuinely shape which mattresses we show you. Someone dealing with lower back pain and someone who runs hot at night might land on very different beds, even if they walk in with the same budget.

There's a good chance you'll speak directly with one of our founders, Nick or Allison. That's not something most mattress stores can say. We're here, we know our products inside out.

The showroom itself feels different from what you're probably expecting; it’s cozy and clean, no fluorescent lights or pushy sales people. We provide digital information screens that show you what's inside each mattress. Spec sheets are right there on display; there are privacy dividers between the beds so you can take your time without feeling like you're on display. And if you're bringing kids along, we've got a table set up so they're entertained while you shop. We've thought about this stuff because we know how important it is to have a nice environment to shop in.

The Mattresses You'll Try

Every mattress on our showroom floor is proudly handcrafted in Michigan. You won't find our Rested Pillow branded mattresses anywhere else.

You'll be able to try a range of firmness levels, feels, and price points, and we'll guide you based on what you've told us about your sleep. There are more mattresses on the floor than what you'll see listed on our website, so it's worth coming in even if you think you've already done your research online.

One of our most talked-about mattresses is the Sunny Side Up with its customizable comfort layer that lets you change the feel of the mattress without buying a new one.

When you're lying on a mattress, we'll encourage you to spend real time on it in your actual sleeping position. Not sitting on the edge, not a quick lie-down. Get comfortable. That's the only way to know if it's right for you.

No Gimmicks. No Pressure. That's Just How We Do It.

We want to be straightforward about something: we’re not in the game of selling you the most expensive mattress, we’re in the game of helping you find the best mattress for you. Our pricing is factory-direct and you are getting our every day, competitive pricing. There's no inflated "retail price" crossed out next to a dramatic markdown. No "sale ends Sunday" sign that's been up for three years.

If a mattress doesn't seem to be the right fit for you based on what you've shared and our expertise, we’ll tell you. Helping our customers find the right mattress is always the goal. We’d rather help you sleep well than sell you the wrong bed!

It’s a simple approach, but it’s the reason so many of our customers who come in feeling unsure about mattress shopping leave feeling like the process was actually… pretty easy. It’s also part of the reason we’ve been able to maintain a Five-star rating on Google and Yelp with reviews like the one below.

“There is no better place to purchase a mattress! From the minute I walked in their door to the minute the delivery people left my door, everything was exceptional.🙂 When I came to look for a mattress I was greeted with a smile and a fantastic attitude. No pressure sales. She listened to me and helped me determine my needs. When the delivery people came, they were also friendly, knowledgeable and helpful showing me things about the bed such as turning the mattress, adjusting the base. Oh…BTW they have the most comfortable pillow I have ever slept on. It’s an organic cotton that’s worth every penny. Thank you Alison and your team! We are thankful to have you in Saint Joseph.”

- Laurie Schmidtke

You're also welcome to come in, try everything, take some notes, and go home to think about it. Come back a second time if you need to. We've had customers visit three times before they made a decision, and that's completely fine. A mattress is something you'll sleep on for years, so it’s important to get it right.

What Comes Next: After You Find the Right Mattress

Once you've found the right mattress, here's what the process looks like.

Our mattresses are often made to order by Capitol Bedding in Grand Ledge, Michigan. That means your bed is built fresh for you rather than sitting in a warehouse somewhere. We'll give you a clear timeline when you order. If you prefer not to wait, we stock many of our best-sellers ready to be taken home that day or delivered shortly after.

We offer a 100-night Comfort Guarantee, giving you time to make sure the mattress is working for you after you’ve slept on it at home for 3-4 weeks. If something isn't right, reach out and we'll work to find a better fit.

From adjustable bases to box springs, platform frames to simple foundations,  there are more base options than ever, and we'll help you figure out which one works best for your new mattress.

Not local? Not a problem. We take phone and online orders and ship all over the country. A lot of our repeat customers come back to us from outside Michigan because the experience, and the mattresses, are worth it.

Come See for Yourself

If you've been thinking about a new mattress and haven't been able to face starting the process, this is a good place to start. No script, no pressure, no games. Just honest people who know mattresses and genuinely want to help you sleep better.

Come by whenever works for you, or book an appointment if you'd like some dedicated time.
